Existing home sales resumed an upward trajectory in September. The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) said sales of pre-owned houses rose 7%, although this still left them 2.3% behind the pace in September 2020.

 

Mortgage rates reached another seasonal high, as the 30-year fixed rate climbed further upward over the past week. The average fixed rate mortgage came in at 3.09% for the seven-day period ending Oct. 14, its highest point since April. The data comes from Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey.

 

The markets are looking ahead to the November 3 Fed meeting where a taper announcement seems likely. Rates may be revisiting pre-pandemic levels over the next few months as the Fed starts to scale back purchases, affected by inflation far hotter than that in February 2020.
